Boxing promoters Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer bet on the outcome of the Mayweather-Cotto fight in 2012. The loser would be forced to wear the other person’s promotional T-shirt.

Mayweather won the fight, and Schaefer was forced to wear a Golden Boy Promotions T-shirt.

The giant poker pot in history

Tom Dwan and Paul Phua, two professional poker players, went heads-up in a $1 million pot in 2014. This is the giant poker pot in history.

During a high-stakes No-Limit Texas Hold ’em game, the wager was made at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

McIlroy, Magic

Rory McIlroy beat Lee Westwood in 2011, and he would win a major championship before the Englishman.

As it turns out, McIlroy won the US Open in 2012, while Westwood has yet to win a major championship. The wager was for $170,000, with all proceeds going to charity.

The Super Bowl

This one is a little more recent, but James Holzhauer bet on the outcome of the Super Bowl in 2018. He bet $5,000 on the Rams, scoring a touchdown in the first quarter.

Justin Bieber bet Twitter co-founder Biz Stone that he would reach one million followers on the social media platform in two weeks in 2013.

Bieber not only met his goal, but he did so in less than a week. As a result, Stone was forced to make a $10,000 donation to a charity of Bieber’s choosing.

In 2006, Urs Weiss, a Swiss citizen, bet that the Swiss franc would rise against the euro. He was ultimately correct and won $1.1 million.

While most people would be happy with a few hundred dollars from a bet, Weissli turned his chance into a life-changing payday.

The Million-Dollar Gamble

In 2008, hedge fund manager John Paulson bet on the housing market collapse.

He was correct, and his bet resulted in a $1 billion profit. This shows that even the most insane bets can pay off big time.

The Canine Residence

Two British gamblers bet on which of their dogs would be the first to die in 2006. Unfortunately, one of the men’s dogs died only two days after making a bet.

He eventually won the bet, but it’s safe to say it wasn’t a comfortable victory.

In 2003, a man in the United Kingdom wagered that it would snow on Christmas Day. When the weatherman predicted a 60% chance of snow, the man accepted his offer and put down £5,000 (approximately $7,500).

Fortunately, it snowed, and he won the bet.

A man in the United Kingdom bet on a horse named “Rule the World” to win the Grand National in 2008. The horse eventually won the race but was disqualified due to technicality.

Champion Fate

In 2001, a woman in the United States wagered $5,000 on Tiger Woods winning the Masters. Woods was only 21 years old and had never won the Masters.

When Woods won the Masters in 2005, the woman beat her bet.
